I figured that this would be a good start to my blog seeing as I just passed my exam to be a certified personal trainer. While I was studying I searched for other exam candidate’s experiences with the exam so I thought that I would share mine for anyone who is looking!
I think one of the most frequently asked questions is: Is the exam hard? Well, that’s a very difficult question to answer! I thought the exam was challenging, but I also felt very prepared for it. Even if you have a background in exercise science, you will still have to order the books from ACE and read them and it would be quite hard to pass without doing this. There’s no magic website that tells you only what you need to know. Just read the books and prepare! I think the biggest thing I noticed about the exam is that there were a few topics that were repeated several times. (Like when to refer a client to a physician and questions on postural deviations.)
How long did it take me to study? I studied for 6 months but I definitely think it could be done in half the time. I took my time and I think there were even a few weeks where I didn’t open a personal training book once.
There are a ton of resources to take advantage of that I wish I had found earlier.1. The ACE Study Center. This place is great! You can call them up or e-mail them with your questions and they will get back to you quickly. It is great if you’re confused about something because they will break it down and tell you just what you need to know for the exam. If you’re confused, just call them. It will be so much easier than trying to look up answers in the book or trying to understand something on your own.
2. Exercise ETC Webinars!! I can’t say enough about how great these are. There are a series of 8 webinars on exerciseetc.com that you can purchase for 20 dollars each. 20 dollars, you say?! Yep. And they are worth EVERY PENNY. I only bought four of them, in the areas I felt like I needed more help and that worked great for me. I specifically remember questions from the test that were covered in the webinars. Pretty cool!
You could try to find a study buddy, but since I live in Maine and there was no one else in the area studying at the same time as me, my study buddy ended up being a cuddly pink flamingo. I guess he was a good one! 😉
