Playlist

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend. We got a taste of spring here in Portland!  Here’s the playlist that I used for spin class last Saturday. Some high energy tunes to get you week started right. 🙂

Ski Weekend

What a week it has been! Last weekend we traveled to Twin Mountain, New Hampshire for a weekend of skiing. Good food, good friends, good skiing. On Friday Angus and I took advantage of Wildcat’s 2 for 1 ticket prices and went for a Valentines Day ski in some fresh powder. And wind. Probably the windiest day I have ever seen on the slopes. After skiing we went out for a romantic pizza dinner at Flatbreads in North Conway complete with tons of screaming (excited for vacation) children running around.

Saturday all of our friends arrived at the house and we went to the Mount Washington Hotel for chocolate skiing. Chocolate skiing is something I’ve done just about every year since high school and it was always amazing! Long ski + stops to enjoy homemade chocolates is probably the best situation I can think of. This year the chocolate ski was organized by someone else and it was LAME. There were hardly any chocolate stops and everything ran out. AND it was more expensive than year’s past. We complained and got our $ back and some free trail passes to come back another time. Squeaky wheel gets the grease!

On Sunday we hit the slopes again but this time at Cannon. It was warmer, not as windy, and a perfect ski day! When we got back to the house we enjoyed some drinks and a delicious feast of soup and grilled cheese.

By Monday my legs were pretty toast but we had those free tickets to go back to the nordic trails at the Mount Washington Hotel. Angus and I went for a fast and chilly skate ski and hit the road to go back home to Portland. After a fabulous four days of skiing I’m now teaching bunches of spin classes this week and MAN do my legs want a break! I would also like a break from commuting in the snow. Snow is great on the trails but not on I95.

Protein Smoothies

After too many hungry stops at the holy donut after spin class I’ve started to plan ahead a little better and bring smoothies along with me to drink afterwards. You may remember my recipe for a banana nutella smoothie a few months ago. Still delicious as ever but lately I’ve been experimenting with healthier, more protein-packed smoothies because let’s face it: as delicious as nutella is, there are zero health benefits. Don’t let that commercial fool you. SO I’d like to share the two healthier versions I’ve come up with this week.

“Chunky Monkey” Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup walnuts
  • 5 ice cubes

 

“Peanut Butter Cup” Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 TBS natural peanut butter
  • 5 ice cubes

The Chunky Monkey smoothie is delicious but the banana I used wasn’t the ripest of all bananas so the smoothie was lacking the sweetness I like. I think next time I’m going to try adding a touch of honey. The Peanut Butter Cup smoothie was perfect! Just the right amount of everything. I don’t typically measure what I’m putting into my smoothies so you may have to play around a little bit with the amount of almond milk. 3/4 cup was my best guess. 😉 Give them a try! Remember Klean Kanteens are great for transporting smoothies to the gym so you can enjoy them right after your workout!

Spin Saturday

Happy Weekend! Every other Saturday I start my day by teaching cycle at Quest Cycle. I love teaching Saturdays! The classes are always full and everyone’s happy that it’s the weekend. Now that I have finally figured out how  to add my Spotify playlists to my blog posts, I plan on posting a weekly playlist. I’m always looking for new music so hopefully some people will find this useful. Here is my playlist I just made for class this morning. Lots of intervals and some rolling hills!

Snow Day Fun & How to be a Sushi Chef

Winter is BACK! Even though I have nearly every Wednesday off, I’m always up for an excuse to take a day off to do fun things and a snow day is certainly a perfect excuse. Angus wasn’t working today either which made it even better! We kicked the morning off with an almost private “group” exercise class at the Y and then went to the Front Room for a delicious post-workout brunch. Afterwards we went to Whole Foods to stock up on everything we needed to make our own sushi. I had never made my own sushi before so some extra time on a snowy day seemed like the perfect time become a homemade sushi chef. Whole foods has all of the supplies you need to make your own sushi and all of the ingredients you will need as well. It’s super convenient if you’re into one stop shopping. Maybe hannaford has the stuff too- I’m not sure. It’s relatively simple to make and the only “equipment” you need is a bamboo mat and some cling wrap. All of the “weird” sushi ingredients (like seaweed and sushi rice should be right there in the same aisle.) Then you can get creative! We made rolls with crab, avocado and carrot, as well as some salmon avocado rolls. Delicious! It’s a little bit of a learning curve with rolling up the sushi but once you get the hang of it it’s a piece of cake! I can’t wait to try again sometime soon 🙂 Want to give it a try?
