So this idea isn’t original but I love it anyway and here is my own version of it. Maybe you’re off of work already for the week and have a few extra hours to kill. Take a break from all the shopping, baking and eating and head to the gym (or outside, in your home… etc.) and try my 12 Days of Christmas Workout!
12 Days of Christmas Workout
Perform the workout just like the song. Example: Round 1: 1. 30 Second Plank; Round 2: 1. 30 Second Plank, 2 20 Second Wall Sits, 3 Squat Thrusters…. Yep! That means when you get to 12 you are doing EVERYTHING! If you forget how the song goes here’s a refresher!
1. 30 Second Plank
2. 20 Second Wall Sits
3. Squat Thrusters
4. Broad Jumps
5. Oblique Twists
6. Push Ups
7. Jump Squats
8. Plank Jumping Jacks Count each one when you bring your feet together.
10. Walking Lunges
11. Mountain Climbers

Today I woke up to another winter wonderland! I guess I picked the wrong year to not coach skiing… Saturday night into Sunday was our first major snow storm. I was very excited to find out that I wouldn’t have to work on Sunday morning and could enjoy a day filled with all sorts of snow day fun. In the morning we lounged around an enjoyed some homemade blueberry scones for breakfast and hung out by the fire. By the afternoon the snow stopped and we were left with a winter wonderland playground. You know what that means? Skiing! Ever since I started skiing in high school skiing through the streets on a snow day has been my favorite activity. Angus and I got out the back country skis and did a great loop around the streets of the neighborhood and through the Fore River Sanctuary. Here are some pictures from our first snow day of the year in Portland!
Okay, this should really be called a milkshake instead of a smoothie because it is THAT delicious. I taught two back to back spin classes this morning at IDEXX and Quest and despite having a bunch of nuts and an orange for a snack between classes I found myself absolutely starving when I got home. I had plans to make a green smoothie but then I decided I wanted something chocolatey and this amazing drink was born. Next time you’re looking for a sweet treat MAKE THIS. You will not be disappointed!
Banana Nutella Smoothie
- 1 banana
- 1-2 TBS Nutella (Depending on how chocolaty you want your drink!)
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 4-5 ice cubes
Toss all these ingredients into the blender and blend!
It’s coming! Winter is almost here. This picture is from last Tuesday when I went for my first wintery run. If you’ve been running all summer and usually give up this time of year because it’s cold, dark, and often snowy, think again! Keep going! I guarantee, once you are out there you won’t even care that it is 20 degrees, snowing, and windy AND it’s a great reason to treat yourself to a post-run hot chocolate. Challenge yourself to keep your routine through the winter season. Wearing the right clothes can make a HUGE difference. Here’s my favorite outfit for a snowy winter run. And yes, I know you’re all thinking you’ve seen me out there in cotton EVERYTHING. It’s because I’m bad at laundry and all my good stuff is dirty. 😉
Skida Hat/Headband I love these! They are lightweight and breathable but still keep me warm in the coldest of temperatures. They come in all sorts of fun bright colors, too 🙂
Base Layer I always wear some sort of base layer…. if it’s really cold, go for the long sleeves. Craft makes a good one that I have had for YEARS but my new favorite is the lululemon swiftly long sleeve shirt.
Jacket Invest in a good lightweight but warm winter running jacket. I have two that I love. One is by Swix and the other is by Craft. They’re a little pricey but well worth it. You will have the jacket forever and it will be sooooo much better than running in that raincoat. (Anyone ever try running in a raincoat? It’s BAD.) These jackets keep you warm and toasty but allow air to circulate.
Pants If you think you can wear those cotton leggins from Target to run in the winter, think again. You will have the coldest legs ever. Here’s what you need to keep your legs toasty and happy. I either wear a fleece lined tight or any fleece lined pant, or a windblock pant by Swix. Helpful hint: TJ Maxx almost always has fleece lined pants by Hind or New Balance for about 20$. Deal!
Socks Wool! Smartwool! That’s all 🙂
Gloves Gloves are probably the one thing I’ll skimp on for winter running. If you’ve ever seen those spandex gloves at the grocery store or target for 1.00 those are what I wear 99% of the time. That or thin bike gloves. If you’re running then you’ll probably get hot and you can stuff these in your pocket when you don’t want them anymore. If it’s really cold maybe wear a mitten.
Well there it is- my winter running (or nordic skiing) outfit. Avoid cotton and you’ll be a happy winter runner just like me.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! It’s hard to believe that it is already December. Man, time flies! Angus and I had a fabulous holiday weekend filled with fitness, food and fun. Here’s a brief recap of the holiday:
On Wednesday it was pouring rain all day. Angus got home from work early and we went to the Y to get a good workout in and then stopped by the Corner Room for a happy hour drink and some snacks. When we got home I got right to work in the kitchen making my pumpkin whoopie pies for Thanksgiving dessert. (Yes there was pie too, of course!)
We started the Thanksgiving holiday off with a brisk 4 mile run. I opted out of the Thanksgiving Day 4-Miler race so we did our very own “turkey trot”. The run was followed by a late afternoon “dinner” at my parent’s house. Delicious!
On Friday we ventured up to Acadia National Park with my friend Alex and her boyfriend, Jeff. We went for a chilly little hike and then enjoyed some well-earned hot chocolates in Bar Harbor.
Saturday was my first day teaching at Quest cycle. After class Angus and I took a walk on the beach and went down to the Old Port to check out the sales for Small Business Saturday and I FINALLY got a Sea Bag. I am so excited for it and it’s my new bag for all my spin/gym stuff.
Now I’m enjoying the last day of my mini-vacation. Tomorrow it’s Afterburn at the BA bright and early at 6:15 a.m. and then I’m teaching a lunch time spin class at IDEXX at noon! Only 5 more days of waking up at 5 a.m.! I’m sad to leave everyone at the Body Architect but also very excited to start my new adventure with Quest Fitness!
